Études is the culmination of a range of influences taken from film music & sound design, ambient music, soundscapes, electroacoustic and electronic music. Each track was born out of a specific influence from film, TV or electroacoustic music and was grown into a unique piece by intertwining the other contrasting styles that have been the building blocks for the album.

The name Études means studies and was taken from French composer Pierre Schaeffer's Études de Bruits or studies of noise.

Pierre Schaeffer was an electroacoustic composer who used magnetic tape to create pieces of music that used recordings of real life, effectively one of the first people to use 'samples' in their music, a practice that is used by most producers in the modern day.

As well as the link to Pierre Schaeffer, many of the types of music and sound art that are used as influences within this album were discovered during my studies at university meaning that Études was a fitting name to describe all of the themes used within.

Having taken a while to fully appreciate the masterpieces that were composed by the likes of Karlheinz Stockhausen & Pierre Schaeffer it was important to create an album that didn't alienate people who are not familiar with these styles, while still exploring all of the influences in a way that maximises what I see as the strengths of each influence in terms of spatiality, atmosphere, energy, progression & originality.

It therefore gives me great pleasure to present to you, Études....
